The Challenge of Goal Setting: Why Moving with Purpose Can Feel Overwhelming

Jan 9, 2025 | ACHIEVE | 0 comments

As the case with every new year, there’s a lot of talk about goal setting, purpose, and creating meaningful habits. It’s an exciting time full of ambition and fresh starts. But what happens when pursuing your goals feels overwhelming rather than empowering? Let’s dive into the reality of purpose-driven living—the good, the bad, and everything in between.

When Purpose Doesn’t Feel Good

Right now, I’m working toward big goals that I know align with my purpose and potential. Yet, despite knowing I’m on the right path, it doesn’t always feel good. Instead, it often feels overwhelming. I’ve felt scattered, like there’s never enough time in the day, and like things are moving too fast.

We’re told that moving with purpose will feel inspiring and fulfilling, but that’s not always the case—especially when you’re deep in the work. Here’s why this happens and how to keep going.

Adjusting to a New Way of Life

Before committing to my goals, life was flexible and fun. I could do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted—whether that was going to the mall, grabbing dinner, or hitting the movies. There was no structure, no strict plan to follow. It was enjoyable, but it wasn’t purposeful.

Now, my days are guided by structure, systems, and intentional actions. And while I know this is necessary to achieve my goals, it’s not always enjoyable. Shifting from spontaneity to purpose is a big adjustment, and it’s completely normal to feel discomfort during this transition.

The Hard Work of Building Habits

Creating new habits is one of the hardest parts of chasing big goals. Habits require consistency, discipline, and effort—and the process often feels draining rather than rewarding. When you’re in the thick of it, it’s easy to question whether you’re making progress at all.

But here’s the truth: That discomfort you’re feeling? It’s a sign of growth. Each time you push through the hard days, you’re one step closer to building habits that will last a lifetime.

Why It Feels Overwhelming

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when there’s so much to juggle. For me, it’s not just about reaching my goals—it’s about balancing everything else in life too. From family responsibilities to work commitments to personal ambitions, it can feel like too much. Add in the need for structure and discipline, and it’s no wonder goal setting can feel so heavy.

But that’s part of the process. Growth and change aren’t meant to be easy. They’re challenging by design because they’re pushing you out of your comfort zone.

Tips for Navigating the Challenges

If you’re also feeling the weight of your goals, here are some strategies that have helped me:

  1. Embrace Systems and Structure:
  2. Use tools like calendars and reminders to stay organized.
  3. Break big tasks into smaller, manageable steps.
  4. Accept That It Won’t Always Be Fun:
  5. Not every part of the journey will be enjoyable, and that’s okay.
  6. Focus on the long-term rewards instead of the short-term discomfort.
  7. Celebrate Small Wins:
  8. Recognize and reward yourself for the progress you’ve made.
  9. Each step forward is a step toward your ultimate goal.
  10. Give Yourself Grace:
  11. You don’t have to do it all perfectly. Allow room for mistakes and rest.
  12. Remember, growth is a process, not a destination.

Final Thoughts: It’s Okay to Struggle

Goal setting and purposeful living aren’t always glamorous. They’re messy, challenging, and often overwhelming. But they’re also worth it. If you’re feeling the weight of your ambitions, know that you’re not alone. Keep pushing forward, and trust that the discomfort you’re feeling now is laying the foundation for something incredible.

This journey isn’t supposed to be easy, but it’s always worth it. Stay consistent, give yourself grace, and keep moving forward—because the best is yet to come.
